How I Came To Play This Game
First Boss Battle
My experience with the Megaman X series is similar to my experience with the xlassic series, being that I'm playing them on a collection disk. The Megaman X Collection is no doubt a must have for the Gamecube or Playstation 2. Who wouldn't want to have the first six Megaman X series games on one disk to play whenever they feel like it? Well, it turns out this game is very rare to find in stores used. This was way back before I used the internet to buy things, so the best I could do is wait for one to pop up at a store. I later found out that the Gamestop store in Taylorville, Illinois which was 86 miles away. Luckily for me, we were going on a trip soon to visit my Grandma who lives in Chicago, so I was able to convince my Mom to stop at Taylorville to get it. It was well worth the trip too!
Story
It has been six months since the destruction of Sigma and his Mavericks, but the Mavericks haven't been completely eliminated. A group of Mavericks was located in an abandoned production factory. The Maverick Hunters are mobilized, under X's command, to destroy the Mavericks in the factory, but the plot thickens. A new Maverick uprising begins to develop under a group of Mavericks that identify themselves as the X-Hunters, and X is faced with a new wave of Mavericks. Dr. Cain tells X that he has no choice and must once again stop the chaos that was developing. However, the X-Hunters also had the pieces of Zero, X's former partner that had sacrificed himself in the previous game for the safety of X. X manages to collect them before they could reconstruct him and program him against X. He also manages to defeat the Mavericks and penetrate the X-Hunter's fortress at the North Pole, defeating Violen, Agile, and Serges, until a resurrected Sigma reveals himself. X finds Sigma with a copy of Zero that he constructed, but the real Zero, having just been repaired by Dr. Cain, blasts him away with his buster. X then fights Sigma and once again defeats him, restoring peace and order again.
Mavericks
Flame Stag, Morph Moth, Magna Centipede, Crystal Snail, Overdrive Ostrich, Wire Sponge, Wheel Gator, and Bubble Crab.
Review
As with many instant sequels, there isn't really much to say about them. There were so many things similar to the first game in the series. The game uses the same graphics engine, similar sounding music, and the basic gameplay was exactly the same. Of course though, there are some differences. This game utilizes a new graphics chip called the Cx4, which allows for transparent objects and 3D effects. You start out with the dash in this game, unlike the first game where it was one of the armor upgrades. The new armor upgrades are even cooler than in the first game. The leg upgrade allows you to dash in mid-air, the arm upgrade allows you to charge up two buster shots at once and fire them one after the other, the body upgrade allows you to use a move called the called Giga Crush which hits all enemies on the screen, and the head upgrade reveals hidden passageways to find secret items. This was the first game in the series to make note that Zero was originally inteded to be evil. He was created by Dr. Wily after all, and his purpose was to defeat both Megaman and Bass. Zero was defeated by Sigma when they first discovered him 100 years after his creation and lost his memories of his original purpose (except for some depicted in Megaman X4). A major part of the game is battling the X-Hunters for Zero's parts. If the player fails to recover all Zero's parts, Sigma rebuilds Zero and makes him evil again. However, after a fight with X, Zero snaps back to normal. You get the true story by collecting all of the parts. Another Street Fighter move appears in the game, this time the Shoryuken.
Releases
Megaman X2 was first released for the SNES in 1994. Then in 2006, it was bundled with the five other games in the series as part of the Megaman X Collection which was released for both Gamecube and Playstation 2. Then the original SNES version was released for the Wii Virtual Console in 2011. It was released for several handheld devices such as Androids and iOS that year too. The Wii U Virtual Console also got it in 2013.
My Rating
I give this game a 10/10. It's like a continuation of the first Megaman X, which was a great game. That makes this game great too.
