How I Came To Play This Game
X Rescued By Zero
My experience with the Megaman X series is similar to my experience with the xlassic series, being that I'm playing them on a collection disk. The Megaman X Collection is no doubt a must have for the Gamecube or Playstation 2. Who wouldn't want to have the first six Megaman X series games on one disk to play whenever they feel like it? Well, it turns out this game is very rare to find in stores used. This was way back before I used the internet to buy things, so the best I could do is wait for one to pop up at a store. I later found out that the Gamestop store in Taylorville, Illinois which was 86 miles away. Luckily for me, we were going on a trip soon to visit my Grandma who lives in Chicago, so I was able to convince my Mom to stop at Taylorville to get it. It was well worth the trip too!
Story
In the year 21XX, all the Mavericks have been neutralized thanks to the efforts of a Reploid scientist named, "Dr. Doppler". Using his Neuro Computer he has been able to suppress any abnormal behavior in the Reploids and prevent them from going berserk. Many of the most advanced Reploids have gathered near their new mentor and founded "Dopple Town", a perfect Utopian community. With Dr. Doppler guiding them, the world seemed ready to enter a new golden age... A few months later, the Mavericks who were supposed to have been neutralized by the Neuro Computer suddenly appeared and began to riot... At the Maverick Hunter's headquarters, all the intelligence indicated that Dr. Doppler was the mastermind behind the invasion. Soon, the call went out to X and Zero to destroy the invading Mavericks and to bring Dr. Doppler to justice. A few hours later, an emergency contact was made by the Maverick Hunter headquarters. They are under attack from Doppler's force. X and Zero return to base immediately to stop them. After defeating the Mavericks in the headquarters, X and Zero fight against Mavericks around Doppler Town. Analyzing the defeated Mavericks, Dr. Cain pinpointed the location of Doppler's hidden laboratory. When X confronted and defeated Doppler, he found out that Doppler was not responsible for the revolt - Sigma was. Doppler had been infected and had built a new powerful body for Sigma, "Kaiser Sigma", but in the end he is defeated by X. However, he turns into a pure viral form, chasing X and cornering him in an attempt to possess his body. There are two endings to the game. They both show that Dr. Doppler completed a true anti-virus. One ending shows that Zero picked up Doppler's anti-virus and used it with his Z-Saber, dropping down and dealing a fatal blow to Sigma. In the other ending, which occurs if Zero is defeated and is undergoing repairs (that includes obtaining the Z-Saber for X), Dr. Doppler himself comes to the rescue, sacrificing himself to use the anti-virus on Sigma.
Mavericks
Blizzard Buffalo, Toxic Seahorse, Tunnel Rhino, Volt Catfish, Crush Crawfish, Neon Tiger, Gravity Beetle, and Blast Hornet.
Review
Megaman X3 once again used the old 16-bit style graphics the previous two games had. This wasn't a bad thing at all, if it's not broken then don't fix it, right? This game brings back all the old stuff from the previous game too, but makes some minor improvements. The bosses were a little more challenging, unlike the first two games where they were a little too easy. This game also gave you new items to collect. In addition to the heart tanks, sub tanks, armor parts, and weapons, there were also four new chips to collect that enhanced the armor parts. However, you could only have one chip at a time, so you had to choose wisely. There are also four ride armors to find and use to your advantage. There is no secret Street Fighter move in this game, but there is the Giga Chip. The Giga Chip could be found in the first final stage, but you would need to find all other items and not grab any of the enhancement chips. The good side is that the Giga Chip gives all the effects of all four enhancement chips and makes your armor turn gold in color. Cool! The ability to play as Zero was first introduced. You can swap out X for in some stages, but you have to fight all of the bosses and see the main story as X. Vile also makes a return in this game as Vile MK-II, and uses new models of Ride Armor to try to get his revenge on X. The only complaint I have with this game is that sometimes in the heat of the game,
My Version's Extras
Since the version in the Megaman X Collection is the Playstation version, I got all the updates from said version. The game features revised sound effects, arranged music, and animated full motion video cutscenes for the game opening and boss intros. There is also a final one at the end of the game.
Releases
SNES Box Art
Megaman X3 was first released for the SNES in 1996. Later that year it was released for the Sega Saturn and Playstation with some updates, but only in Japan and Europe. In 1997 it was ported to the PC. Then in 2006, the updated version was bundled with the five other games in the series as part of the Megaman X Collection which was released for both Gamecube and Playstation 2. Then it was released for Mobile Phones in 2010.
My Rating
I give this game a 10/10. With the up-scaled hardware of the Playstation, the old 16-bit style better.
