How I Came To Play This Game
First Boss
A few years ago, my brother got a Nintendo 64 for his birthday. It was his first console and one of the many games he wanted was Star Fox 64. He bought it from Slackers and immediatly started playing. It took him a while to get used to the controls but soon he had it down. To this day, I've never seen anybody do better in that game in person. I also played the game, and I now own the remake Star Fox 64 3D. Later my brother got a Rumble Pack so that we could play using the force feedback system.
Story
Fight With Andross
A few years ago, General Pepper had banished the evil Andross to the planet Venom for his dangerous experiments. Soon, strange activity was observed on the surface of the planet. So he sent the Star Fox team to check it out, members being James Mcloud, Peppy Hare, and Pigma Dengar. Once they got there, Pigma betrayed the team and the rest got kidnapped by Andross. Peppy barely escapes, while James is presumed dead. Peppy goes back to Corneria to inform James' son Fox about what happened. Soon Andross launches a full scale war against the whole Lylat System. Fox teams up with Peppy Hare, Falco Lombardi, and Slippy Toad to form a new Star Fox to stop the evil forces of Venom and to gain vengeance for his fathers death. they successfully defend planet after planet until reaching Venom. Also, they fight a rival team known as Star Wolf several times. They were hired by Andross to stop the Star Fox team. Their members include Wolf O'Donnel, Leon Powalski, Andrew Oikenny, and Pigma Dengar. After reaching Venom, Fox flys into the core alone to fight Andross. there, he defeats Andross and barely escapes the explosion. Without the help of his father, he would have never made it out. It is still unknown if it was really his father or a hallucination. Fox and the team go back to corneria where they are offered to join the army, which they decline.
Pros And Cons
Story
Story Scene
The story is basically a plot-remake of the first one. It is more in depth with the characters and how their related to each other. Now it isn't just saving the Lylat System, it is also getting vengeance for Fox's father. I think that it was smart to re-vamp the story of the original instead of the cancelled Star Fox 2.
Characters
The Star Fox Team
The characters are basically the same as the ones from the original Star Fox, but a few new ones have been added. A new team known as Star Wolf with its own cast of members. Also, a matenance robot named ROB 64 is introduced.
Gameplay
Corneria
The gameplay is largely improved from the original Star Fox. The controls are more fluent, the frame-rate is faster, and the graphics are better. Crosshairs were added to show where exactly the lasers will shoot. Also, a lock-on charge shot and Smart Bombs were added. The Smart Bombs replace the Nova Bombs from the original. You can also do U-Turns and Loops in the air to evade enemies.
Graphics
Solar
The graphics display the usual capabilities of the Nintendo 64. They are definetly a huge improvement over the original Star fox that used polygon shapes. Now, the polygon shapes have detail on them making the objects look like actual space fighters and ships. Also the stages have been given the same treatment, being improved in look and design.
Music
No music is kept from the original Star Fox. You would think that to be bad because of lack of consistency. However, the new music is good too. I especially like the Main Theme, Stage Select, Corneria, Katina, Fichina, and Star Wolf music. However, the music suffers from being on a 64-bit console, which could still only do computer sound effects.
Releases
Remake Box Art
Star Fox 64 was originaly released in Japan in 1997. It was released in the United States two months later. The only other port of the game was released on Wii Virtual Console in 2007. In 2011, a remake of the game was released for the Nintendo 3DS. This version had improved graphics, sound, and could be played in stereoscopic 3D. However, the remake didn't include any new features except a challenge mode to get the most points.
My Rating
I give this game a 10/10. The graphics, story, control, and music were all improved over the original.
