How I Came To Play This Game
Burning Truck
I decided to play the Gun Survivor series after a while of playing games I had already played before. I wanted to learn more about the workings of Umbrella and what else was going on in the fictional world. So I bought both Resident Evil Survivor and Resident Evil Dead Aim.
Story
Hypnos
The plot follows around an agent called Ark Thompson who was requested by Leon S. Kennedy to infiltrate an Umbrella facility. He managed to breach security in the Umbrella-controlled Sheena Island by impersonating the leader of the Umbrella facility, Vincent Goldman. Goldman, after being told of Ark by a small boy, Lott Klein, causes an outbreak intentionally, causing him to lose his memory, and his train of thought. Thus, the game begins with Ark not remembering who he is. Ark's journey through the island slowly leads him to believe he is Vincent Goldman and is responsible for the horrible experiments
conducted on the children brought to the island. Ark slowly learns of
Vincent's actions and encounters a small boy named Lott and his sister Lily Klein. They at first run and attempt to attack Ark, but they slowly learn to trust him after Ark attempts to save Lott for his sister. Making his way through the city, and into the Tyrant Plant, Ark encounters multiple B.O.W.'s on the island he must combat. This include zombies, cereberus, lickers, hunters, and T-103s. In the Tyrant Plant, Vincent attempts to kill Ark, but is instead killed by the experimental Tyrant Hypnos-T Type. After a brief battle, Ark appears to have killed the creature and continues on. Eventually the boy and his sister are reunited and proceed to escape the island with Ark, who by now has remembered who he was and why he was on the island. They proceed to an elevator that takes them to a helipad for escape. The Hypnos-T Type Tyrant has since then changed forms and attacks Ark again, after a small battle, the creature finally turns into its third and final form. After a battle on the helipad, Ark finally appears to have killed the creature and proceeds to the helicopter for escape. As the three fly off, the creature tries to bring down their helicopter and jumps onto it, Ark then fires two missiles at the creature, finally killing it for good. The game ends with a scene of the helicopter flying into the distance, Ark telling the children that he doesn't know what will happen next, but can keep flying as long as they have fuel.
Pros And Cons
Story
Garage with Cerberus
The story is nothing special. The cliché of someone losing they're memory seems pretty old. I don't think that it fits in a Resident Evil game well. At least they made it interesting by making Ark think he was someone else. The highlight of the story was what happened on the island before the events of the game.
Characters
Main Characters
I do not like that they brought kids into the story. Sherry Birkin from Resident Evil 2 was a kid, but she was a major part of the plot, as she was the daughter of the creator of the G-Virus William Birkin. The kids Lott and Lily seem to be just there, no real purpose at all.
Gameplay
Hunter
The gameplay is very different from the traditional Resident Evil gameplay. Instead of a 3rd person view with pre-determined camera angles, it is now a first person view with a true 3D world. The controls are still basically the same. Unlike most first person shooters, the gun the character is carrying is not in view. Instead, your health and ammunition are displayed. When you aim, a yellow cursor appears and you use that to aim at enemies and shoot at them. This gives the game an arcade like feel. Also like an arcade game, there is no real save feature. You are given four continues for every new game. Whenever you die, you loose a continue. Once all continues are used up, the game is over and you have to start at the very beginning of the game. It does give you the option to save the weapons you got so far after you lose, which makes getting through the earlier parts of the game quicker and easier. You are also given the option to save your weapons if you beat the game.
Graphics
Tyrant in window
The graphics seem like no other Playstation game I have ever seen. They are not good compared to other graphics at the time. Everything is very pixelated, and when you look closely while turning the camera, you can see the graphics warp. The 3D perspective was groundbreaking at the time, but the technology was too primitive to really make it good.
Releases
The game was originally released for the Playstation in 2000. Then a Windows version was released in 2002, but only in Taiwan.
My Rating
I give this game a 7/10. This wasn't the greatest Resident Evil game I ever played, but I still like it. I don't think it was as bad as everyone says it was..
